The Smile Dating Test is a valuable tool, especially if you’re dating internationally.

How do you know you’re dating the right person?

Take the Smile Dating Test, an online quiz that uses colored smiley faces to reveal your dating style and who you’re compatible with.

Like any other internet quizzes, this one also lacks scientific support. But it’s not a waste of time. Rather, it’s a valuable tool for self-reflection and navigating Bangkok’s dating scene.

Learn how this test can help you out.

What Is the Smile Dating Test, and Why Is It Viral?

The Smile Dating Test quiz asks users to answer 12 questions about dating, including potential reactions to situations and preferences. It combines the 16 MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicators) personality types, using colored smiley faces to represent them.

It was created by KTEST, a South Korean online platform hosting multiple personality tests and games. It was originally in its native language but has since been translated into English.

Love to Know states the quiz went viral on TikTok in early 2023. One reason for its popularity is its simplicity. The test isn’t an intricate assessment. Users are given a situational question and two answers to choose from.

Another reason is that it’s fun to share with others. Many users posted videos of their reactions to their results. Their opinions varied. Some said their results were accurate, while others disagreed.

Are you ready to take this dating personality test? Here’s a step-by-step guide:

What Does This Quiz Reveal About Different Dating Personality Types?

Let’s go over each smiley and its corresponding personality:

Red (ENTP)

People with red smileys are direct. When they have feelings for someone, they are honest about them.

They’re confident, passionate, and adventurous. However, they hate being controlled or restricted.

Orange (ENFJ)

This type is popular for their humor. However, their loyalty lies with their lover.

They can quickly sense if something’s off and figure out the reason. The catch? They can easily get hurt by small things.

Yellow (ESTP)

Yellow smileys tend to be spontaneous and unfiltered. They are also more interested in looks than personality.

They prefer not having attachments, so they let people come and go. When boredom strikes, they call it quits and never look back.

Blue (ENTJ)

People with blue smileys seem to have high standards. But they fall in love easily. They’re also aggressive towards the person of their affection because they want progress to happen quickly.

They’re born leaders. When conflicts arise, they try to resolve them immediately by using logic rather than emotions.

Purple (ESFP)

Purple smileys often feel lonely, so they tend to date and flirt frequently. But when in love, they can smoothly transition to a relationship.

They often show off their partners on social media. They tend to improvise on dates, which points to their fickle nature.

If you’re wondering how they are in breakups, they act coolly. They leave without drama and forget about their exes fairly quickly.

Mint (ESTJ)

Mint smileys don’t jump the gun when they like someone. They think over their feelings before acting on them. But once they’re sure about them, they have no qualms in expressing them.

They usually organize and take the lead on dates. In turn, they want their partners to acknowledge them, even for the little things.

They dislike getting too emotional during arguments. When they feel they’re becoming burdens to their lovers, they contemplate a breakup.

Pink (ESFJ)

Pink smileys tend to have many friends because of their approachable nature. Because of this, their relationships often follow the acquaintances-to-lovers trajectory.

They tend to be careful when dating. They’re also quick to notice and empathize with their partners’ feelings. They’ll consider their relationships stable when their lovers express themselves generously.

Pink smileys are conflict-averse. They detest lying and get disappointed when their partners exhibit rude behavior.

Olive (ENFP)

Olive smileys are expressive and tend to fall in love easily.

They become talkative to get the attention of the one they like. They don’t take their feelings lightly, acknowledging their intensity. They’re sincere and passionate daters, wanting to know every detail of their lovers’ lives.

Green (INTP)

Green smileys don’t focus too much on appearance. Instead, they want their matches’ interests and hobbies to align with theirs.

They tend to keep to themselves and are slightly indifferent. They pull away when they’re being asked to do something they dislike. They don’t listen if the topic doesn’t interest them. They want a fun love, not a serious one.

Burgundy (ISTJ)

Burgundy smileys are less interested in dating and flirting compared to other dating personality types. They don’t like push-and-pull, so they tend to make decisions quickly.

In line with that, they prefer responsible partners. Conversely, they avoid liars and flakes.

Navy (ISFJ)

Navy smileys are independent and quick-witted. They prefer planning dates to ensure they don’t interfere with their personal lives.

They aren’t too good at expressing themselves, but the little things easily touch them. They like recognition, so they get extra happy when their partners compliment them.

They dislike difficult conversations because they believe they worsen relationships. They get disappointed when their partners fail to uphold their promises.

Brown (INFJ)

When someone makes the first move on them, they’re more likely to date them. Ironically, they tend to have many thoughts, so they take their time before entering relationships. But when they do, they go deep and all-in.

Trust is the trait they value most. When partners disrespect their worth, brown smileys won’t think twice about ending things.

Khaki (INTJ)

This type appears cold. They take time to open up because they dislike being swayed by their emotions. But once they realize they align with their matches, they let their walls down and become great listeners. When they love, they love deeply.

Beige (ISTP)

Beige smileys care a lot about the people they like. They’re the most dedicated partners, often offering solutions to soothe innermost thoughts.

But they don’t talk much and sometimes express themselves poorly. They can also feel fatigued at the beginning of a relationship. And with that, they need to recharge as they date.

Gray (ISFP)

When catching feelings, gray smileys initially keep them to themselves. They don’t confess out of fear of rejection. They wait for someone to confess first. From there, they’ll make their move and date them.

These daters like giving heartfelt gifts to their partners. When in love, they’re the optimistic and reassuring voice their lovers need. Conflicts annoy them and tire them out, so they try to avoid them.

Sky (INFP)

Sky smileys expect love to feel like the movies. This clouds their logic, making it difficult to find and date matches.

They tend to be fragile and can easily get hurt when their partners are too direct. They pull the plug when their worries and anxieties get the best of them.

Flaws aside, sky smileys want to be in comfortable and stable relationships. They may not show it well, but they are passionate about their lovers.

Why Should You Take the Smile Dating Test?

According to Dankook University psychology professor Lim Myoung-Ho, personality tests are popular among Korea’s MZ Generation (a mix of Gen Z and millennials) for their practicality in dating.

The test results help them lead conversations or serve as a basis for their deal-breakers. They’re a means to filter out potential partners.

“In this society, if you know the type that suits you well in advance, that is considered more efficient,” Lim told CNN.

However, in Thailand, the dating test is a more subtle way to gauge compatibility.

Thais value saving face and social harmony. On the surface, it may seem like they’re shielding themselves from embarrassment. But it’s deeper than that. They’re keeping a “cool heart” (jai-yen) by restricting the display of genuine feelings. They believe that doing otherwise is weak, inappropriate, and disrupts the harmonious environment.

With this, Thais take an indirect approach to dating. They don’t explicitly communicate their preferences and check for compatibility upfront. Rather, they subtly ask or discuss them.

The purpose of the dating test isn’t to guarantee a great match; it’s to give you a better understanding of yourself and others.

Reflection can always do you good. Assessing your strengths, weaknesses, and expectations is necessary to meet the right person and become a better partner to them.

You don’t need to have the same smiley. As long as your non-negotiables and priorities align and you make healthy compromises, there shouldn’t be a problem.
